Stroke or Not?
Anyone watching KCBS-TV's Grammy recap had to be wondering what was going on when reporter Serene Branson began her report. Just moments into her story, her speech became garbled and incomprehensible. According to news reports, Ms. Branson was checked out by EMTs at the scene and driven home by a friend, where she is said to be resting comfortably.
Medical experts have been debating the incident on television and the internet ever since, particularly questioning the decision NOT to seek more thorough medical attention. Here's WHY they are concerned:
If an individual DOES suffer a stroke, the administration of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA)within three hours of the episode can make a huge difference in minimizing permanent damange that can be caused by stroke. tPA is a clot busting drug, the only one approved by the FDA.
So what are the warning signs of stroke? According to the American Stroke Association its:

Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body |

Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding |

Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes |

Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination |

Sudden, severe headache with no known cause |
