For more help, watch me demonstrate in this VIDEO.

The knit stitch is worked from the FRONT of the needle, with the work beginning on your left needle.  It leaves a smooth finish when done in rows.    (fig. knit stitch )

STEP ONE:  Insert your right needle point into the front of the stitch on the left needle.  (fig: how to knit 1)

Your needle point will be just to the LEFT of the yarn, with the point aiming toward the back.  (fig: how to knit 2)

STEP TWO:  Extend the right needle point far enough to allow yarn to wrap around.  Wrap yarn around the tip COUNTER CLOCKWISE as shown.  (fig how to knit 3)

STEP THREE:  Bring loop back through the stitch you entered.  We’ll call this the ‘old stitch.’   (fig how to knit 4, then how to knit 3a, how to knit 5)

STEP FOUR:  Slide the ‘old stitch’ off the left needle.  Your ‘new stitch’ is now on your right hand needle.  (fig how to knit 6)

Repeat for next stitch.    The knit stitch leaves a smooth finish on the ‘right side’ of the work as shown here:  (fig hwt to knit stitch close up)
