For more help, watch me demonstrate in this VIDEO.

The purl stitch is easy to remember.  It’s the one with the roundish ‘lump’ or “pearl” after completed.  (fig:  purl stitch)

STEP ONE:  Insert the right needle point into the stitch on the left needle, bringing the needle point to the FRONT of your work.  (fig how to purl 1)

STEP TWO:  Wrap your yarn CLOCKWISE around the right needle point. (fig how to purl 2)

STEP THREE:  Push the right needle back through the “old” stitch on the left needle, (fig how to purl 3)

bringing the new loop of yarn behind the work on your left needle. This is your ‘new’ stitch.   (fig how to purl 4)

STEP FOUR:  Slide the ‘old’ stitch off the left hand needle. (fig how to purl 5)

(Sometimes it’s useful to ‘hold’ your new stitch with your thumb to prevent it from sliding off the right needle)  You’ve just completed a purl stitch. (fig how to purl 6)

Repeat steps one through four for remaining stitches.  Successive rows of ‘purl’ stitches leaves a bumpy (“pearly”) surface as shown.  (fig  purl stitch close up)
