I remember the first time my picture was in the paper. It was in fourth grade and Mr. Bray had come from his carpet plant to talk to us about the carpet industry. My hometown, Dalton, Georgia is the birthplace of the wall-to-wall carpeting business. Anyway, they dragged a few kids to be posed with our special visitor and Debbie Norville was one of them. I remember how excited I was to see my picture in the paper. I've been in the papers and magazines a 'few' times since then. and I still get excited. The stories aren't always accurate. In fact, sometimes the reporters get it terribly wrong. Just a few months ago, a New York City newspaper reporter said I had once worked ABC's Weekend Edition of Good Morning America. Nope - never did!
I often ask for a show of hands when I speak to groups, "How many of you have been reported on or at an event that made it into the papers?" Most hands go up. Then I ask, "Please leave your hand up if they got everything right?" With a laugh, the majority of hands go down. I guess it's a reminder that news stories and articles are written by human beings and as human beings we are fallible.
There may be a mistake or two in some of these articles, but nothing earth-shattering. Read and enjoy.
