Fun With Kids

Play Dough

I wish I had a nickel for every can of Playdough© that went bad because one of the kids forgot to close the can. We went through countless cans of the stuff. After a while, I began to get steamed about how much I was spending on the stuff. That's when we started to make our own. This recipe was first given to me when child #1 was in nursery school, so it has stood the test of time! Enjoy - and spend the money on something else!

Home Made Play Dough

1 cup flour

1/2 cup salt

1 cup water

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

3 tablespoons cream of tartar

Food Coloring as desired - make a separate batch of dough for each color desired

Mix everything in a pan and cook over medium heat, constantly stirring, until it forms a ball. This will take less than five minutes. Put the ball on the counter and knead for a couple minutes. DO NOT LET YOUR CHILDREN DO THIS! When cool, let children play with dough. Store in refrigerator in plastic container with snap on lid. This will keep a few weeks. By the way, this tastes nasty, but it won't hurt your children if they do decide to taste it!

Homemade Bubbles

Bubbles are another play item that just doesn't last very long. But you can keep your kids occupied in the backyard for an eternity IF you have an endless source of bubbles. Here's a cheap way to keep those bubble bottles full!

Home Made Bubbles

1 gallon water

16 oz. bottle of Joy - other brands don't work as well

1 oz. bottle of glycerine ( ask for it at the drug store )

Mix all the ingredients together gently so it doesn't get foamy. I suggest you use a larger cleaning bucket to mix the solution, then transfer into two plastic milk jugs. Refill your old bubble bottles and have fun!
